Therapeutic Touch is a holistic, evidence-based therapy that uses energy in an intentional and compassionate way to promote balance and well-being. Based on the belief that the body can heal itself, practitioners consciously direct universal energy through their hands to alter the client’s energy field, thus helping to mobilize the client's natural abilities to heal.
This complementary energy healing modality was developed in the early 1970s by the pioneer Dr. Dolores Krieger, PhD, RN, a professor at New York University, and Dora Kunz, a natural healer.
After conducting their own research, together Krieger and Kunz standardized the technique that has been defined as a “contemporary interpretation of various ancient laying-on-of-hands healing practices.”
Therapeutic Touch treats the whole person; it relaxes the mind, heals the body, and soothes the spirit. The principle is that the human body’s energy field extends several inches to several feet from the body.
Research and clinical experience have shown that Therapeutic Touch is effective in the following:
promoting a relaxation response
reducing anxiety and stress
facilitating the body’s natural healing process
fostering a sense of well-being
